The year 2025 marks a historic milestone for higher education in Timor-Leste. Thousands of the nation’s brightest minds have officially completed their studies, signaling the rise of a new intellectual wave ready to shape the country’s future. Based on recent data, the number of graduates from major universities has reached a significant peak. Following the number of graduates for every university: 1,749 from UNPAZ (Universidade da Paz), 1,584 from UNTL (Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e), 551 from UNITAL (Universidade Oriental Timor Lorosa’e), 353 from DIT (Dili Institute of Technology), and 301 from UNDIL (Universidade de Dili).

However, behind the celebrations and graduation gowns lies a stark and daunting challenge. While a new generation of leaders has officially emerged from the National University of Timor-Leste and other institutions, they are stepping into an increasingly competitive and limited labor market. The growing phenomenon of graduates facing unemployment or struggling to find work relevant to their fields of study has become a critical issue this year.
